NIKOLAI TARKHOV (1871-1930)
Nikolai Tarkhov - painter, one of the first Russian impressionists.
Tarkhov was born in a wealthy merchant family. Studied art independently. In 1897 met Constantin Korovin in Crimea and later worked with him in Korovin's Moscow studio. Tarkhov debuted in 1899 at the Moscow exhibition World of Art (Mir iskusstva), after which he moved to Paris where he continued exhibiting in Salon of Independents. Works by Tarkhov were exhibited with Renoir, Cezanne, Gauguin.
Tarkhov's first personal exhibition took place in St. Petersburg in 1905, in 1906 in Vollard Gallery, Paris. He exhibited his work at the Salon d'Automne and Salon des Inde'pendants in Paris and at Izdesbsky's Salon. In 1913 he participated in Armory Show in New York, Chicago and Boston.
In 1983 a retrospective exhibitions of the painter were held at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow and State Russian Museum in Leningrad and in 2003 - at the State Tretyakov Gallery.
His works are in the leading museums of Russia, Europe and America including MUDO-Musée de l’Oise, Musée d’Art et d’Industrie (Roubaix), Grenoble, Geneva (Petit Palais), Russia: Kirov Museum of Fine Arts of Viatka), St Petersburg (State Russian Museum), Moscow (State Tretyakov Gallery), Moscow (Museum of Russian Impressionism), Amsterdam (KattenKabinet), Ramat Gan (Israel), Musée Léon Dierx (La réunion), Spain (Alava Fine Arts Museum), Baltimore (The Baltimore Museum of Art).
